Now that Mother Nature has finally started to cooperate and the weather is warming up, you and your family are probably enjoying the great outdoors with an afternoon of mountain biking or a morning at the tennis court. However, unless you have a stock, boil and bite or a custom made mouthguard fitted by your dentist, those afternoons on the playing field, could turn into a trip to the ER.

The American Dental Association explains that dental injuries account for a huge percentage of recreational, amateur and professional sports, however, most of those blows to the face may not have been as serious had a custom made mouthguard been worn.

Sports mouth guards, mouth protectors and mouthguards are used to protect against facial injuries. Custom made mouthguards can also prevent tooth loss and breakages to the teeth.

Mouthguards are usually made for the upper teeth, but your dentist may recommend a custom made mouthguard for the bottom teeth as well if you wear a mouth appliance such as a dental bridge or braces.

There are three types of mouth protectors available. These include Stock mouthguards, Boil and Bite mouthguards and custom made mouthguards.

Although stock mouthguards are the least expensive of the bunch, they also offer the least protection. Premade and sold at most sporting goods stores, stock mouthguards are often bulky and rarely fit perfectly. Stock mouthguards make it nearly impossible to talk or even breathe and are often left in the gym locker because they are so uncomfortable.

Boil and Bite mouth protectors are better than stock mouthguards, but must be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Boil and Bite mouthguards are also premolded, but will mold to your mouth after placing in hot water and putting inside your mouth before biting down. If you do not follow the instructions to the letter, you could end up with a badly fitting and uncomfortable mouthguard.

Custom made mouthguards are the most resilient, comfortable and reliable mouthguards available, and although more expensive than stock or boil and bite, will provide you and your family with the most protection.

Nearly every sport should include a custom made mouthguard whether you are spending the day at the beach riding the waves, tearing up the asphalt on a skateboard or challenging your neighbor to a friendly game of racquetball. Mouthguards are just as important as pads and a helmet.
